What will you do on Veteran’s Day? Veteran's Day Flag Celebration

Will you attend a parade or a flag raising ceremony? Perhaps visit a relative who served in the military or is in active duty? Maybe make a resolution to contribute time or money to organizations that help support our military servicemen and women?

If you’re a member of the armed forces yourself, will you be participating in any special events? Will you be spending time with your family? Will you be spending time with friends within the service?

Veteran’s Day is a day of remembrance for those that served in all branches of the military. It also serves as a reminder that the dedication of those service members should not go unheralded and unrewarded.

Per the United Sates Department of Veteran’s Affairs website, the purpose of Veteran’s Day is seen as a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

So, what will you do on Veteran’s Day?

The idea of Veteran’s Day as a holiday has been observed in one form or another since the end of World War 1. It was originally celebrated as Armistice Day, a way to recognize the end of World War I and the veterans who served during the war. The United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs recaps the history and events leading up to the creation of the Veteran’s Day Observance here.

Over the last 90 years, people have celebrated in many way. Parades have been thrown. Dedications have been held. Reunions and get-togethers are common ocurrence. It’s also a federal holiday prompting the closing of government agencies, schools, banks and many businesses.

Also from the VA website is a video describing Veteran’s Day and how you may be able to get involved with support organizations on a local level. The videos is 3:45 minutes long.
