Fabric Choices: Which One is Right For You?

Today’s vast selection of polo styles and fabrics mean that comfort without compromise of function or safety is more than possible — it’s a reality. But what’s the difference between all of these polos? With all of the choices out there, it’s more difficult to decide which polo is right for you. It all comes down to the material:

Cotton, Polyester, and Cotton/Polyester blends. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

For on duty shifts in the office rather than the outdoors, you may prefer a traditional and comfortable cotton polo. These affordably priced shirts are a nice option for tight budgets, and they often have color-retention and soil-release features. Cotton is soft, breathable and a good choice for an everyday uniform shirt.

PROS:

• High degree of breathability

• Softness

• Insulating

• Environmentally friendly and biodegradable

CONS:

• (Degree of Shrinkage) If the cotton is not pre-shrunk

• Fading

• Wrinkles

Polyester/Cotton blends tend to be more durable and colorfast than 100% cotton shirts. They’re also more resistant to wrinkles and shrinking, making them a good choice for every-day casual duty uniforms. Another important consideration is that these shirts easily take virtually every form of customization.

PROS:

• Shrink, fade and wrinkle resistant

• Durable

• Breathable

• Softness

CONS:

• Not as breathable as pure cotton

• Does not wick as efficiently as pure polyester

Polyester polos are typically top-of-the-line performance wear. These shirts tend to be lightweight, extremely breathable and moisture-wicking, making them an excellent choice for any high-energy or athletic situation. These are the obvious choice for casual-tactical/training uniforms. The cooling features of performance polos are especially advantageous when wearing body armor in the summer months. The more comfortable you are, the better your job performance.

PROS:

• Durable

• Shrink, fade and wrinkle resistant

• Flexible

• Dries quickly

CONS:

• Not as breathable as cotton

• Temperature sensitive/ flammable

• Petroleum-based
